Illinois man must serve 75 percent of sentence for drug crime

There are certain unexpected situations that can drastically change the course of events in a person's life. Being charged with, tried for and convicted of a drug crime is definitely one of them. Many people in Illinois have lost jobs or faced serious family problems in connection with drug-related incidents.

One man in particular was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison after he was convicted in court of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. Authorities say the 51-year-old man had attempted to sell cocaine for approximately $27,000 to a person who happened to be a police drug informant. The cocaine had a much higher monetary value, however, which was nearly $50,000.

The man has since been penalized with a substantial fine for the determined value amount. The court also stated he must serve at least 75 percent of his sentence. He will be allowed to take time off the 15 years for more than 1,400 days he's already spent behind bars.

Sometimes, it's possible to avoid conviction altogether when faced with drug crime charges in Illinois. Much often depends on the type of defense presented in court. An experienced criminal lawyer can weigh all options available and determine which approach best suits a particular situation and has the highest chances of keeping a defendant out of prison. Even in circumstances where conviction is not avoided, a criminal defense attorney can be a great advocate to convince the court to lighten a sentence or offer alternative sentencing that does not involve going to jail.
