Off-duty Chicago cops involved in fatal shooting

Last Saturday afternoon, Joshua Beal, 25, was shot to death after pointing a gun at an off-duty officer with the Chicago Police Department. His brother, Michael Beal, 28, tried to gain control of the gun during the struggle with the officer who fired the shots. As a result, Michael Beal was charged with aggravated battery of a police officer and attempting to disarm a police officer and was held on $500,000 bail.

It is no surprise that there are two different accounts of what happened in the altercation - from the prosecution and Joshua and Michael Beal's family members. Discrepancies include verification of how many off-duty officers were involved, how the incident began and how Joshua Beal was killed.

The Chicago Police Department initially disclosed that only two off-duty officers were at the scene. Both were said to have fired shots at Joshua Beal. On Tuesday during Michael Beal's court appearance, they revealed that two other off-duty police officers were present during the incident. Police and the prosecution say that the Beal family was leaving a funeral and were driving erratically past an off-duty officer.

The Beal family has a vastly different account of the afternoon's tragic events. Family members say that the incident began when one of the off-duty officers tried to run one of their relatives off the road. The family then pulled over the cop to confront him on his actions, and Joshua Beal got his weapon after the officer pushed a woman to the ground and pointed his gun at her.

Regardless of what the truth is regarding this case, it is clear that a strong legal representation is needed to fight for the rights of the accused. If you find yourself in need of this type of defense, contact an experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible.
