More than 30 arrested in drug raids for fentanyl and heroin

The painkiller fentanyl and heroin laced with fentanyl have been prolific on the streets of Chicago and have caused an alarming number of overdose deaths in Cook County over the past year and a half. In fact, at this time last fall, there were 74 fentanyl-related overdoses within a 72 hour period that ended on October 1.

Almost a year later, last Friday, September 23, more than 30 people were arrested in a massive drug sweep in Chicago. The raids targeted those involved with the distribution of fentanyl and heroin laced with fentanyl. The addition of fentanyl to heroin, even in small doses, makes it 30 to 50 times more potent - and more dangerous. As little as 2 milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal.

The initial investigation was lead by detectives of the Chicago Police Department's Narcotics Division and primarily targeted drug deals near the Eisenhower Expressway. This stretch of road is dubbed "Heroin Highway" because many users drive in from the suburbs to purchase the drugs.

Undercover officers bought drugs on the streets to build cases against the accused. Drug samples were tested by state police, and then detectives conferred with state and federal prosecutors to strengthen their cases against the alleged suspects.

A total of 33 people were arrested between September 22 and 23, with 12 more individuals still wanted in connection with the investigation. Suspects face a range of serious drug charges, as the investigation involves both local and Federal authorities. Of those arrested, 28 are documented gang members, 25 are felons and 10 are on parole for other crimes.
