Murder Case Results

Murder-for-hire sentence reduced: Client was a former attorney convicted of paying an undercover agent to murder his fiancée's ex-boyfriend. The victim was not injured. Client pled guilty and faced up to 10 years in prison. Mr. Meczyk argued that client suffered from an anxiety disorder that diminished his mental capacity. The judge agreed and reduced the sentence to 8.5 years, and client gets credit for time served, so he will be in prison about 5.4 more years.

Murder acquittal: Client was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm and other offenses where the alleged victim was shot nine times. Mr. Meczyk and Mr. Goldberg obtained a NOT-GUILTY verdict at trial and the client avoided spending decades in prison.

Murder conviction REVERSED: Clients were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to consecutive 90-year prison terms. During closing arguments at trial, the prosecutor made comments to the jury accusing defense lawyers of making up stories, mistreating witnesses and fabricating a defense. On appeal, the conviction was reversed because the accusations made by the prosecutor at trial served no purpose other than to prejudice the jury against the defendant.

Murder, hung jury: Mr. Meczyk hung a jury, nine to three in favor of not guilty, in a murder case where the client confessed to the murder and gave the police a five-page written confession.

Murder conviction appealed, client not guilty: Client was charged and convicted of first-degree murder in 2004. However, Mr. Meczyk continued to fight for his client, filing a successful appeal and receiving a new trial. This time, client was found not guilty. Due to the relentless efforts of Ralph E. Meczyk & Associates, the client left the courthouse a free man after spending nearly eight years in prison.
